Basic Classes and Special Seminars are some of the educational outreaches of PMUG. By attending these seminars or free classes the needs of beginner, intermediate, and advanced Mac users can be met. Classes are free to PMUG members and $10.00/each for non-members.
Check the PMUG calendar for specific class dates. Classes are scheduled from 7:00pm to 9:00pm
Sign up for all PMUG College Classes by calling the PMUG College Hotline, 503.224.4289. You can also send email to firstname.lastname@example.org. State your name, telephone number, email address and which class you want to attend. Messages are picked up about twice a week, and you may not receive a call back unless the class is full or cancelled.
The PMUG College offers a basic series of classes designed to help you get the most from your Macintosh and iOS devices (iPhone/iPad/iPod). The Basic Classes normally cover topics like those described below. Actual material presented may vary based on students attending each class.
CLASS ONE: NAVIGATION IN MAC OSX
This class includes exploring the essential System Preferences and functions of the Finder. The use of the Dock to personalize your computer will be covered. A look at how Mission Control and Launch Pad change the way projects begin.
CLASS TWO: THE WEB, iCLOUD AND EMAIL
Discover how to create and manage bookmarks on a web browser. Find out the difference between doing email on the Mail program and using a web browser to retrieve it. See how iCloud can allow you to keep email, web bookmarks, and other documents synched on all of your devices.
CLASS THREE: PHOTOS AND FACEBOOK
Learn to use iPhoto for organizing, editing, and enhancing your photos. Find out the difference between the Events and Photos portrayal of libraries. Familiarize yourself with how to have sets of photos become the background of your desktop. The basics of Faces & Places will be covered. Also learn to post your photos to Facebook to share with your friends.
CLASS FOUR: EVERYTHING ELSE – KEEPING OSX HEALTHY, CLASS QUESTIONS
This class includes Dropbox, the use of Disk Utility, Keychain Access and Activity Monitor. We will cover useful utilities, screen shots, and tricks using Keyboard and Character Viewer. Also we will demo backing up your data using an external drive. This class will also be used for addressing requests from class members.
CLASS FIVE: WRITING, NUMBERS AND PRESENTATIONS
Learn how Pages can be an easy to use word processing program as well as a formidable publisher that uses powerful media components. We will also show how “Text Edit” can be a good tool for cross platform use. Also look at how Numbers can provide arrays of information and perform calculations with ever changing data. Keynote can graphically tell stories or display information in a very multimedia fashion.
CLASS SIX: THE iOS SYSTEM FOR iPAD, iTOUCH, AND iPHONE
Learn how to arrange and manage your apps. Tour the Settings and determine the functions of each part of that very important app. Learn how to close apps and reset your device when problems arise. Learn how to oversee your Data use and programs that continue GPS tracking in the background. Discover functions that are buried in the iOS system that can enhance your use of these devices.
CLASS SEVEN: iOS PHOTO MANAGEMENT
Included will be Apple’s Photos program.
Also explore some apps that are recommended by PMUG members and other consultants. This class can save you from having to dig through the App Store for useful apps.
The PMUG College also occasionally offers Special Seminars covering a wide variety of subjects and programs. You need to be a PMUG member and preregister for the seminars. The cost for a seminar depends on the length of the class. If you have an idea for a special seminar topic, please contact us!
