Picks and Ponderings
by Allen Watson
YOUR MAC GEMS
What's your favorite software add-on? Be it freeware, shareware, production tool or utility, a plug-in for another product, or full-blown very expensive software, what is the program (or what are the programs) that you would not want to live without? The ones you add to every new Mac you buy?
In the coming months at the PMUG general meeting, we are going to have one or more occasions for PMUG members to come up front and demo (or just talk about) your favorite software for the Mac. Please start thinking now about what you might be willing to present to us, and make yourself a little list.
Add to it as new things occur to you. You can have five to ten minutes to share (no more than that for any one person), so your list does not have to be long.
If you have one or more things you are willing to share, please e-mail me at allen_watson@pmug.org to let me know, so I can start scheduling them into the meetings..
Pick of the month: JAlbum.net
This month I’ll feature a site called JAlbum. At this site, you can download free software (for Mac, Windows, and other platforms) that lets you build a photo album web page with amazing ease. Just drag a folder of photos into JAlbum, pick your “skin” from the popup menus (which show a tiny preview of the design as you navigate the menu from one skin to another), click the button to create the site, and you’re done! All you need to do at that point is upload the resulting files to a web host.
I published my pages to my hard drive and then uploaded them to my site with my usual FTP client, but JAlbum has FTP built in, if you prefer. You can post your albums wherever you like-to Dot Mac, for instance. And JAlbum will even host your albums on their own site for free, making them available to the public, if that’s okay with you.
